Dr. Max Chernesky is the recipient of the 2003 Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Chernesky
received his B.Sc. from the University of Guelph in 1965, his
M.Sc. from the University of Toronto in 1967 and his Ph.D. from the University
of British Columbia in Microbiology in 1969. He currently is Professor
Emeritus at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He belongs to numerous
professional organizations, in Canada and worldwide and has sat on numerous
editorial boards for a number of journals as well as served as Editor-in-Chief
of the Journal of Clinical & Diagnostic Virology. He has held a number
of executive positions in Canada and international groups such as the
Pan-American Health Organization. His latest award was the Diagnostic
Virology Award from the Pan-American Society for Clinical Virology in
1996.
Dr.
Chernesky has been a teacher of numerous courses to undergraduate, graduate,
post-graduate and other students throughout his academic career. He has
supervised numerous people in research positions for graduate degrees,
as well as post-doctoral students. Dr. Chernesky continues to be productive
in research with the latest funding award being for $2.5 million as part
of the Ontario SARS Working Group. He has been extremely prolific in
publishing, having published numerous book chapters, and 138 papers in
peer reviewed Journals, as well as countless abstracts. He has been an
invited speaker worldwide, speaking on numerous topic areas of virology
and STD’s. In addition to all of these academic achievements, Dr.
Chernesky has also been actively involved in the Canadian College of
Microbiologists since its inception including serving as President of
the CCM in 1989 to 1991.
