JOB DESCRIPTION           

The Clinical Microbiologist is a Laboratory Scientist with a PhD degree in a relevant discipline and training in an approved clinical microbiology program.  The training will lead to eligibility for certification with Canadian College of Microbiologist as a Clinical Microbiologist and/or the American Board of Medical Microbiology.  Experience will include a minimum of 2 years in post doctoral work and will include knowledge and experience in the practice of clinical microbiology and infection prevention and control.

The Clinical Microbiologist is expected to demonstrate professionalism in his/her interactions with internal and external stakeholders of the health care environment and maintain competence in the discipline of Clinical Microbiology through participation in an accepted program of continuing professional development.

Responsibilities of the Clinical Microbiologist include but are not limited to:

  • Participate as a clinical microbiologist in the provision and administration of microbiology laboratory services.
  • Provide subspecialty expertise in clinical microbiology
  • Provide leadership and expertise in the development and implementation of diagnostic molecular microbiology
  • Participate in the Laboratory Outreach Program with a focus on clinical microbiology
  • Participate in the provision of on-call services in clinical microbiology and infection prevention and control
  • Participate in continuing medical education activities sufficient to maintain expertise in clinical and professional activities.
  • Participate in teaching clinical microbiology to residents, , medical and nursing students as well as providing education to other qualified professionals (eg physicians, nurses etc),
  • Participate in the supervision of undergraduate student research
  • Conduct collaborative and/or independent basic, clinical or translational research
  • Participate in selected departmental, hospital, faculty and university committees
  • Participate in selected external committees and organizations relevant to professional activities

 
Kingston General Hospital is a university-affiliated teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre for Southeastern Ontario and therefore a teaching and academic research role is expected to complement the clinical service component of the job.  The teaching component may include learners at the undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate levels as well as laboratory technologists, nurses or other health care professionals.  Research activities may include participation in patient-oriented clinical trials, translational research and/or basic research.

Administrative service responsibilities, such as serving on departmental or hospital committees may be assigned to the Clinical Microbiologist by the Department Head or Medical Director, in consultation with the Chief of the Division of Medical Microbiology.   Participation in extramural professional activities, such as service to outside professional associations, is encouraged.

The reporting structure for the Clinical Microbiologist is through the Service Chief of the Division of Medical Microbiology to the Medical Director of Clinical Laboratory Services, Pathology and Molecular Medicine.

An appointment to the Faculty of the School of Health Sciences in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine with the possibility of cross appointments to other departments as appropriate is a component of this position.
