Specialist Microbiologist (SCCM)

Membership Form and Fees

  • The College has developed a procedure to recognize and to designate members with qualifications and supervisory expertise beyond the basic requirements for obtaining the RMCCM status. There are three specialist categories:
    SCCM(MLS): Specialist Microbiologist in Microbiology Laboratory Science
    SCCM(COM): Specialist Microbiologist in Commercial/Industrial Microbiology
    SCCM(ENV): Specialist Microbiologist in Environmental Microbiology


    For the SCCM in Medical Laboratory Science, Commercial/Industrial Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology or Biosafety, you must :
  • have at least a B.Sc. degree (or its equivalent) in microbiology or related biological sciences
  • demonstrate that you have accumulated 150 continuing education credits within the past 5 consecutive years, and
    have the following years of microbiology experience:
  • If highest degree is B.Sc., 9 years of microbiology experience
  • If highest degree is M.Sc., 8 years of microbiology experience
  • If highest degree is a doctoral degree, 6 years of microbiology experience
    and
  • pass an examination for Specialist certification established for this purpose by the College.
  • As of January 2002, certification in SCCM(MLS) is by examination (see Syllabus) whereas SCCM(ENV) and SCCM(COM) do not require examination until 2006.
