Dear Canadian Microbiologists:

The Council of Canadian Academies has established an Expert Panel on the State and Trends of Biodiversity Science in Canada. The panel was set up at the request of the Minister of Canadian Heritage and on behalf of the Canadian Museum of Nature, and is supported by other members of the Federal Biodiversity Information Partnership (FBIP). The charge to the Panel focuses specifically on the state of taxonomic and biosystematics research in Canada — research that discovers, distinguishes, identifies and classifies species of organisms. These areas of research support effective approaches to biodiversity conservation, the maintenance of ecosystem services and our ability to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

The panel recognizes that the microbiota play a key, indeed the largest, role in global ecosystem maintenance, mitigation and adaptation, and that its survey must embrace them. But microbial systematics is pursued rather differently than zoological or botanical systematics, and there are few if any practicing microbial taxonomists working in museums, or (as yet) associated with FBIP. It will be difficult for us to identify researchers with a primary interest in microbial classification, or who maintain collections for use by the research community. Thus we are writing to the heads of microbiology departments in Canadian universities, medical, dental and veterinary schools for help.

We ask that you forward this letter and these URLs to microbial researchers in your institution who are engaged primarily in systematics research or who maintain collections available as a service to the larger research community. Thank you.

Survey of Taxonomic Expertise and Survey of Biodiversity Collections in Canada

The Council of Canadian Academies (www.scienceadvice.ca) has convened an Expert Panel to conduct an assessment of:

R20;The state and trends of biodiversity science in Canada: Are we equipped to understand the challenges of our biodiversity resources?”

This assessment has been requested by the Minister of Canadian Heritage on behalf of the Canadian Museum of Nature, and is supported by other members of the Federal Biodiversity Information Partnership. The charge to the Panel focuses specifically on the state of taxonomic and biosystematics research in Canada — research that discovers, distinguishes, identifies and classifies species of organisms. As part of the assessment the Panel is conducting a web-based survey of taxonomic research and expertise survey of biodiversity collections in Canada.

Enquête sur l’expertise taxonomique et enquête sur les collections taxonomiques au Canada

Le Conseil des académies canadiennes (www.sciencepourlepublic.ca) a formé un comité d’experts pour évaluer :

« LR17;état et les tendances de la biodiversité au Canada : sommes-nous outillés pour comprendre les défis que présentent nos ressources en biodiversité? »

L’évaluation a été demandée par le ministre du Patrimoine canadien, au nom du Musée canadien de la nature, et est soutenue par les autres membres du Partenariat fédéral en matière d’information sur la biodiversité (PFIB). Le travail du comité d’experts porte principalement sur l’évaluation de lR17;état de la recherche taxonomique et biosystématique au Canada – la recherche qui permet de découvrir, de différencier, d’identifier et de classifier les différentes espèces d’organismes. Ces secteurs de recherche adoptent des approches efficaces en matière de conservation de la biodiversité et d’entretien des écoservices, de même qu’en ce qui concerne notre capacité à atténuer les effets des changements climatiques et à nous y adapter.

Dans le cadre de cette évaluation, le comité d’experts mène une enquête sur le Web portant sur la recherche taxonomique et l’expertise en matière de taxonomie et les collections de la biodiversité au Canada.
